Description
A good unsigned, 8.5 x 8.5 x 3 cm. Georgian 3 inch compass/sundial, internally domed mahogany case. Paper dial with 32 cardinal points and 360 degree outer ring with 1 degree divisions, compass needle with pin/bar release (needle points North), finely chiselled brass sundial with hour ring in Roman numerals (morning IIII-XII, afternoon/evening XII-VIII), divided into 7 1/2 ? minute blocks of time. Gnomen striated and nicely shaped, wheat ear decorated. Six pin triangular hinge blocks. Dome to fit the gnomen has been perforated due to thinness (1 mm.) of wood at some time in the past. Square mahogany construction with original, eared C-hook and hinges. Some rust to compass needle but does not affect function. Original glass. A lot of man hours needed to construct this example of a pocket compendium !
