Description
A complete and attractive antique Henry Crouch microscope, from England and dating circa 1880. This is one of the largest models manufactured by Crouch, a 100% original item, in good condition and working order. The microscope includes an objective lens, an eyepiece, a live box, a polarizer, and an analyzer. The base of the microscope is made of solid and stable cast iron enamelled in black lacquer. It is connected to the upper section by a brass screw. The remaining parts occupy the upper section and are also made of brass, protected with the original period clear lacquer.
On the back of the microscope base, the manufacturer’s name, HENRY CROUCH LONDON, is engraved in black. Below it is the serial number, 4913, which places it in the early 1880s. The design of this model is uniquely attractive, both for its simplicity and its functionality. The base has the shape known as the “English foot” and was even adopted by manufacturers from other countries who wanted to sell their models in England.
Crouch was a manufacturer of microscopes and optical equipment who founded his own company in London, England, after apprenticeship with the firm of Smith, Beck & Beck. Crouch opened his business in 1862 with his younger brother, William. The first H&W Crouch shop was located on Regent’s Canal Dock, Commercial Road. The Crouch brothers began by making copies of Smith, Beck & Beck microscopes, but seeing that the market for these reproductions was limited, they soon began manufacturing affordable, good-quality microscopes for middle-class students and scientists. One of the most famous instruments manufactured by Crouch was his binocular microscope. In 1863, Henry Crouch was elected to the Royal Microscopical Society. The Crouch brothers dissolved the society in 1866; the business remained in Henry’s hands and prospered over the years.
