Description
A very rare lithotrite—an instrument for crushing bladder stones—based on the design of the French surgeon Pierre Salomon Ségalas. The instrument is unsigned, bearing only the number “4”.
The Ségalas lithotrite, presented to the Academy of Medicine in 1833, is a modification of Heurteloup’s *percuteur* (percussion lithotrite). Its main modification lies in the addition of a third branch and a striking three-armed nut terminating in three spheres. It functions via both pressure and percussion.
An early instrument in the history of modern urology, a field that emerged in the 1820s under the pioneering influence of Leroy d’Etiolles, Civiale, and Heurteloup.
