Description

Microscope composed of a two-piece wooden tube covered with red leather gilded with floral decoration. There are two caps for the eyepiece and objective. The draw, also in wood, is covered in painted paper.

The whole is held in place by a gilt brass support consisting of a circular base, a stand ending in a ball head and supporting a clamp with a circle on which is engraved the signature “C.A. Buttieri a Roma“.

The base, resting on three small ball feet, and the tube support are engraved with acanthus leaves.

The base has a hole in the center to accept a small ivory and ebony disc for the choice of white or black background.

The original cylindrical wooden case is covered in embossed leather (floral decoration) with a red fabric interior. The base of the case has two closing hooks and the interior is lined with beige chamois.

NB: Two telescopes signed by Carlo Antonio Buttieri are known, one dated 1726 and another 1737 (see Louwman page 87).
