Description

Miniature red cardboard hourglass made in Italy circa 1650.

Very small hourglass made of a frame consisting of two circular cardboard end-pieces held together by five straight metallic pillars coated with vegetable fibers tinted vermilion.

One of the end-pieces is covered with a used fabric and painted in vermilion colour, the other lost its fabric and reveals the mounting principle of the twisted silver wires surrounding the pillars of the hourglass and used as a frieze for one of the end pieces (probably packed and which were previously covering the entire height of the hourglass).

Within the frame is a flask made of two bulbs in yellowish « bubbled » glass of cylindro-conical shape with flattened bases and filled with a beige-coloured sand (traces). The bulbs are joined by wax covered with beige silk threads and bound over with twisted silver wires.

Reference: illustrated on cover and pages 210/211 of the book “Sabliers d’Autrefois”.

Dimensions: height of 4,3 cm x diameter of 2,4 cm.

Italie made circa 1650.
