Description
A seldomly used field set of naturalist’s simple microscopes for details of flora and fauna by H.F. Angus & Co. 83 Wigmore St. London W. c.1910.
Found in it’s original black card case with trade label, the set consisting of a hand held flower magnifier with bone handle and silvered (Lieberkuhned) low power lens, a two part live box for small samples that can be compressed between glass layers with low power lens at the top and a cylindrical “bug jar” with glass viewing area, removeable brass top with lens and a brass base.
The entire ensemble fits into the pocket case with push button closure, measuring a mere 10 x 7 x 3 cm. (4 x 3 x 1 inches). Slight wear to the golden lacquer but no abuse to the instruments. Glass and lenses are perfect. Silvering is slightly oxidised.
Herbert Francis Angus (1872-1948) worked for Baker and then went into business on Wigmore St. around 1910. Forming many partnerships (Swift and Son) and alliances with other UK, European and American firms, he sold microscopes, slides and other accessories throughout WWI and the Company was sold in 1920.
