Description
An excellent nickel silver four draw telescope signed on the first draw, ‘J.H. Steward, 406 – 66 – 456 Strand, 54 Cornhill, London. Maker’. With presentation inscription engraved to the ray shade, ‘Presented to The Royal Victoria Yacht Club by Thomas Knowlys Parr Esq, in Memory of Henry Bold Knowlys Esq, who was a Member of this Club for 20 years. May 1912′.
The telescope measures 36 inches long when fully pulled out with an additional 3 inches when the pancratic eye-piece is out. It has a main lens diameter of 2 and1/8 inches. The barrel is covered with brown tan leather. The telescope is quite heavy and of very nice quality, larger than previous ones I have had. There are no dents, cracks or chips.
The draws pull out smoothly and the telescope gives an excellent image.
The mahogany case holds an additional high power eye-piece and has a brass handle to the rear.
A brass plaque to the lid has an equally engraved presentation inscription as on the telescope.
There are a couple of minor cracks to the lid.
The Royal Victoria Yacht Club was founded at Ryde, on the Isle of Wight in 1845 and uniquely granted ‘Royal’ status immediately.
