Description

Oval silver sundial signed “Roch Blondeau AParis”.

The upper plate has three hour scales (one in Roman numerals and two in Arabic numerals) with a flower decoration in the centre. Gnomon engraved with foliage, for latitudes ranging from 40° to 55°.

Steel needle with brass pivot, the bottom of the compass indicating the four cardinal points (north, east, south, west). On the back is the signature, two control hallmarks and two small turned feet.

There is also a rosette decoration of acanthus leaves on the back of the compass and on the gnomon spring. In its original black leather case with burgundy velvet interior, note a small loss on the back.

Note: -Roch Blondeau was the King’s engineer for mathematical instruments, active in Paris between approximately 1650 and 1672. He was based on the Île de la Cité in Paris, on the Quai du Grand Cours d’Eau, under the sign “A la boussole” (At the Compass).

-A similar dial, dated 1670, is kept at the Greenwich Maritime Museum, inv. AST0482.
