Description

Pair of pocket globes signed “CARY London”.

–        Terrestrial Globe with cartouche: “Cary’s Pocket globe agreeable to the latest

discoveries London Published by J &W Cary April 1791’ with a mention near the Sandwich Islands ‘where Cook was killed 1779”.

The shagreen case shows for one: “A TABLE of Latitudes & Longitudes of Places not given on this Globe” and for the other :”the WORLD as known in Caesar’s Time agreeable to d’Auville”.

–        Celestial Globe signed “J&W CARY Strand”, orange inner case. London circa 1791

Reference: Globes manufacturing company started by the two brothers John (1755-1835) and William (c. 1759-1825) Cary. The brothers were already successful in their own trades: John as a map engraver and salesman, William as a highly regarded instrument maker.

Both brothers continued to keep their other businesses separate, but the location of the business on The Strand was also their own place of work. Around 1820 John moved elsewhere, leaving the globe-making business to his sons, who signed their globes George and John Cary (1821-1850).
