Description
Georges Oberhaeuser, A rare example of number 1 drum microscope, circa 1845, with Provenance
A rare example of the largest drum microscope made by Georges Oberhaeuser. This one bears the serial number 994, dating it to around 1845.
It is in excellent condition, preserving five original eyepieces, a set of five original objectives, a stage micrometer, a camera lucida, and several slides.
The base of the condenser lens is still present, but the lens itself is missing.
The entire set fits into its mahogany carrying case, which is itself transported in its very rare original leather case (this microscope appears to be the only one known to come with its leather case).
Furthermore, this microscope bears evidence of an earlier provenance: the three green Oberhaeuser boxes are labeled with the name of the pharmacist Edouard Mercier, based in Nantua.
Edouard Mercier succeeded his father, a pharmacist who had obtained his degree in 1836. This microscope has remained in the family ever since.
Very good condition.
The case measures 37 x 27 x 18 cm.
This large model is really rare and the leather case is a rarity.
