Description
A 19th-century rectal speculum. Turning the checkered-ebony handle opens and close the three blades. The obdurator ,which appears to be ebony, has some chips but the speculum itself is in good order and works perfectly. No maker’s mark but likely English or American. Very similar instruments can be seen in the Weiss 1863 catalog and the Tiemann 1889 Armamentariam. The fourth image shows a cut from the latter. It is also illustrated in the 1879 Tiemann.
