Description

A Simplicia Mahogany cabinet with 10 shallow drawers and a higher drawer behind the doors. The 10 shallow drawers are still mostly filled with Simplicia. Some drawers contain 56 compartments each, the other 5 contain 60 compartments each. Of the total 580 compartments, only 19 are empty. One of the compartments contains a pill box from the “J. van der Molen” pharmacy in Vollenhove. The cabinet was part of the collection of D.A. Wittop Koning. The simplicia cabinet originates from the [K] van Giffen pharmacy in Purmerend.

Simplicia refers to medicines derived from plants, animals, or minerals, which are used in the form in which nature provides them, or at least without having undergone any significant changes. The composita (compound medicines) were prepared from the Simplicia, or single medicines.
