Description

A lacquered brass surveying level measuring 10.5″ long. The telescope has rack and pinion focussing and is signed, ‘Franks, Optician, Deansgate, Manchester’, and on the lower platform, ‘No 91’.

The instrument comes to focus giving a good, clean inverted image. There is no damage but there is some rubbing to the lacquer in places. Lacking the hairs for the cross sights.

The case has replaced wooden inserts.

Probably Aubrey Franks who originally traded from 95 Deansgate, then had premises at the end of King Street, Manchester, and around 1881 acquired additional premises on the corner of King St and Deansgate.
