Description

We are offering two early 19th-century nipple shields. The one in sterling silver is hallmarked for London, 1813. The diameter at base is 5.5cm. $595.00. The example in boxwood has been SOLD.

The London Science Museum notes: “Nipple shields were designed as breast feeding aids to be worn over the nipple and areola of the breast of a lactating woman, permitting the flow of breast milk while providing a larger surface for the baby to latch on to.” They were also used to protect the nipple and areola from an infant’s teeth.
