Description

A cupping set that includes a breast pump. While we’re sure that other sets with breast pumps exist, this is the first we’ve encountered. All three cups are original and fit firmly into the pump. The ten-blade scarificator, which works perfectly, is signed : “F.C. LEYPOLDT/PHILADELPHIA.” Edmondson notes that: “Several less-prominent Philadelphia instrument makers made their way in the trade by specializing in instruments employed for a particular kind of therapy. For example, Louis V. Helmold and Frederic C. Leypoldt made and sold scarificators and lancets for bloodletting, made largely of brass…”(James M.Edmondson, AMERICAN SURGICAL INSTRUMENT MAKERS, Phila: Norman, 1997: 61). We are dating the set based on the fact that Leypoldt’s son, Fred. W. Leypoldt, joined the firm in 1874. The case is made from  a handsome tropical wood, rosewood or mahogany and ,like the instruments it contains is in very good good condition, including the deep-red velvet lining.Lock is intact but no key is present. Dimensions of the case: 8″ x 5″ x 4.5”
