Description
A very fine No. 3 (limited useage) with rare substage achromatic condenser signed “Powell and Lealand, 170 Euston Road, London”. Unserialized with the modified (bent) rear legs, this microscope is dated below the fine adjustment knob as being produced in 1877. In addition, the cumbersome steadying struts are gone, the stage is much thinner, mechanical and without the “safety stage”. The substage is racked vertically and geared for centering. A long draw tube making this model as large as the No. 2 ( 22 inches/17 inches min.). A much larger mirror, doubly articulated and extending far beyond the substage.
Golden lacquer is 99% with only slight wear areas and oxidation. The rack and pinion is smooth and tight with the exception of ONE missing tooth at the top (never use this area of the rack anyway as the objectives are too long) and one small dent on the main body tube (probably from improper shipping). See photos for detail. As with most collector pieces, the microscope has been separated from it’s case and accessories and displayed with limited “toys”. They include a 1/4 and a 1/12 inch signed objectives (the latter with canister), a nosepiece analyser with prism, double revolving objective changer, stage forceps and stage bullseye, set of stops and of course the signed substage achromatic condenser with 3 lenses (works flawlessly). Every mechanical part works smoothly as designed and the double sided mirror is near flawless. The fine focus knob on top of the arm also operates smoothly for excellent optics !! Dated 1877 and no screws have ever been tightened (bruised).
N.B. now have a full set of light stops in signed canister for this microscope.
