Description

A very fine (as new-unused) anodized and bright brass sextant signed “Gray and Keen, Strand Canning Dock, Liverpool” with a certificate of accuracy dated May 1, 1891. Having an index arm of 9 inches with an arc circle of 10 inches, this instrument is in original, untouched condition. Although the silvered scale (runs out to 150 degrees) is oxidized-silver sulphide black, this instrument has been perfectly preserved for over 130 years. No faults, rare address. A perfect specimen.

The case has been professionally refinished with new green felt liner and tabs bearing the previous owner’s initials but what a cracker. This instrument had to have been recovered when the business folded as new, old stock (auction?). I have never seen a more perfect instrument of the era (see photos). The magnifying vernier reads to one arc second ( 100 feet). The address places the partnership right on the edge of the main docks of Liverpool (strategic) for any Captain looking for navigational instruments. This is the one to own for a reasonable price.
