Description

Simple transit/drainage level by Edward Troughton II of London c.1800

Fresh to the market after a hiatus of 35 years (ex. Christie’s 1988-see photo), this instrument exhibits machining and optics not surpassed in over 200 years.  14 x 5 inches with a 1 inch OG lens. 50% original lacquer to the long tube, the rest 90 % + with adjustments for height/angle at both ends, intact swinging bubble level below the body tube, spectacular optics with a two draw eyepiece (with protective cover) and cross hairs intact. Signed on the base plate in flowing script “Troughton, London”, terminating in a bulbous tripod/staff head. The main telescope can be removed and reversed/rotated and is held in place by two hinged clamps with locking pins and strings intact. The flame mahogany case measures 17 x 6 x 3 inches deep with hinges, lock and one eared C-hook.

Apprenticed to his brother John Troughton II and partnered with him from 1788-1804. Patented the dividing engine for fine scale division on nautical/celestial instruments. Signature changed to J.& E. Troughton until 1826 when he partnered with William Simms to become Troughton & Simms (one of the most prolific and finest instrument makers of the Georgian and Victorian eras). This instrument could be as early as 1788. A fine example of his work with only the OG glass, flared collar in absentia.
