Description

Signed “WATKINS, Charing=Crofs, London, NIGHT” this telescope is in extremely good condition for it’s age. No splits or cracks to the 20 inch mahogany barrel, 2 inch OG doublet lens (the bone of contention between Watkins and Dollond), sliding ogee ocular lens, dust protector on OG end has a threaded light reducing insert for daytime use. The image is clear/crisp and the magnification superb. The brass knurling is roped and only one screw has been replaced in the collar to the barrel. 35 inches extended length. Very unusual design and designation (most are DAY or NIGHT).

Francis Watkins (1723-1782). Thereafter J. & W. Watkins then Watkins and Hill.
