A very unsual dental elevator, type Ryff-Scultet but with a long and perpendicular handle in brass which seem predated the handle of a dental tooth key. A powerful and large trephine for neurosurgery by Gasselin, circa 1900-1910

A large and unusual trephine for neurosurgery with crank and handle. The instrument is signed “Gasselin Paris” and it measures 37cm in length. We can date circa 1900-1910. The handle, a rather unusual design and used to reinforce the support and the force of the surgery, fixed opposite the crank turns and is rotatable. It cannot not be used. By a Maker of Rock-Crystal Lenses, French, late 1830’s, signed “Rossin, nev. et succ. de Chauchoix.” Opening from 3-1/2″ to 6-3/4″ (9 – 17 cm), this large “monocular” is made of gilt brass with two drawtubes, the bell-shaped main tube bound in four floral-filled panels alternating red and brown. The instrument consists of a partially hollowed-out disk mounted on a knee stand. It is engraved on its circumference with a 360-degree scale with double numbering in reverse (each 10-180 X 2); the two diameters, adorned with foliage, bear the signature C.
