Description

A very rare full brass large octant signed “G. F. Brander & Hoschel fec. Augustae Vindel”, datable circa 1777.

If we find some small octants by Brander or by Brander & Hoschel, this large example mounted on a tripod stand is extremely rare. We can find only another in wood and brass preserved in the Deutsches Museum and it seems lacked to all the private collections.

Brander described these octant in a publication published in 1777. At that time, Brander was already in partnership with Hoschel.

The present example lacks its eyepiece, otherwise it is complete and in original condition.

Otherwise, the present example was owned/retailed by Peter Desage from Heidelberg in the mid-19th century.

A rarity by the most famous German instrument maker from the mid/second-half 18th century.

The octant itself measures 37cm, the entire instrument 55,5cm.
