Description

Horizontal brass wire-axis sundial with bracket. The plate rests on four screws and supports, mounted on a hinge, a bracket and its weight to adjust the horizontality.

This bracket, decorated with foliage on the back, has a slide on which a slider slides to adjust, at the required latitude, the wire-axis connected to the base plate.

The top of this plate is engraved with 3 time scales, numbered VI-XII-VI, 6-12-6 and VI-XII-VI for the latitudes of 43°, 47° and 49°, as well as the signature “Pre Le Maire AParis”.

In the center, a compass engraved with the 4 cardinal points written in French (North – East – South – West) and intermediate points (N.E, N.O, S.E, S.O), has a blued steel needle in the shape of an arrow mounted on a pivot of brass and a brass index makes it possible to adjust the magnetic declination of the place of observation.

A flat glass covers everything. The bottom of the plate is engraved with a list of 20 cities with their latitude and the spring of the perpendicular is engraved with foliage.

Signature : “Le Maire fils AParis“.

Note: Pierre Le Maire, son of Nicolas Le Maire, was famous for mounting magnet stones, hence his brand name “A la pierre d’aimant” Quai de l’Horloge from 1700 until his death around 1745.

He made all kinds of mathematical objects there, and many sundials.
