Description

An excellent example of a military issued 2 inch OG, black leather bound, 4 draw, 4 element refracting telescope by Nathaniel Worthington. Signed in Georgian script “Worthington, London” this 36 inch telescope has been well preserved and rarely used c.1840-1855 (Opium/Crimean War). The leather cover has a couple of scuffs and a minor dent on the second draw (see photo) but otherwise in fine condition considering the age. Doublet OG gives clear, sharp images (no lens cap). Extendable enameled ray/sun shade and flip type eyepiece cover. Closed length is 10 inches (25 cm.). The leather carrying case with shoulder strap is in unused condition (often wondered why the tolerances for the case were such that the OG cap was not tighter and the cap would remain in the case, rather than being lost).

Nathaniel Worthington apprenticed under Ramsden and succeeded Berge. He was in business at 196 Piccadilly in London, operating from 1835-51. This telescope would have been produced near the end of his solo career (partnered with Allen in 1851). Scripted signature never changed.
