Description
Firstly, although the tongs are 20th century they are most unusual in that they have a pivoting glass filter/polariser attached that swings 90 degrees for additional definition of the samples. The samples (some card, some cork) are housed in a Victorian mahogany case measuring 10 x 5 x 5 cm. The set contains many specimens of quartz depicting light rotation and variation i.e left, right, split, lens, wedge, etc. as well as other clear samples showing exceptional colour variation and light rotation. The yellow amethyst seeming to be the pick of the litter. The tongs are in perfect condition with 180 degree lens rotation on both sides. They measure 15 cm. in length and spring open to allow for insertion of the samples (some quite thick and in two parts).
