Description
A very rare example of a fish-shaped “spring-loaded lancet,” patented by the cutlery manufacturer Louis Auguste Hachette, based in Rugles (Eure department).
Hachette filed his patent on June 21, 1845.
A worm screw inserted into the body of the lancet allows the blade to be extended or retracted to varying degrees.
A rotating ring operates the mechanism.
The fleam is signed “Hachette à Rugles” and “Breveté du Roi sans garantie du gouvernement” (Patented by the King without government guarantee).
The mechanism operates smoothly.
Note a small loss at the tip of the blade; additionally, in this specific example, the fish casing is not slit along the sides, meaning the blade cannot be fully retracted.
Extremely rare.
Blackened bone, brass, and steel.
