Description

A good (untouched) 5 inch diameter (13 cm.) miners/simple surveyors compass with silvered dial by W&S. Jones c.1800-20.

8 cardinal points, outer ring engine divided to a full 360 degree in one degree increments and further divided internally into 4, 90 degree quadrants. Needle points North on jewelled pivot and locks on the side by a bar beneath. Beautifully engraved with only slight spotting of the silver. Signed W. & S. Jones, Holborn, LONDON. Original glass. No cracks or chips. Folding sighting alidades/vanes lack centering hairs but will include a black horsehair for replacement by buyer. Underside is plain with staff pole/tripod adapter and butterfly wing nut to tighten. Screws untouched, some oxidation and verdegris but everything functions as intended. No cap or case but an honest piece.
