Description

Museum quality Georgian era artificial horizon in ovoid mahogany case with mercury filler funnel and bubble level.

3 1/2 inch (8 cm.) diameter brass backed, frosted? glass with red painted edge (some paint loss chips) sitting atop 3 adjustable legs in tripod format with additional screw to act as a stopper once the hollow area is filled with mercury via the pewter funnel.

Ingenious yet somewhat fiddly, it would be a two man job to fill the glass reservoir since this has to be done on it’s edge. Once the reservoir plug is unscrewed from it’s keeper position, it is threaded into the mercury filler hole. The ovoid (elliptical) mahogany case has 6 drilled holes to accommodate all of the simple accessories ( 3 knurled legs, pewter cup, keeper and glass bubble level-1x 3 cm.). The case measures 5 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 inches deep (13 x 11 x 5 cm.) with eared hook and a pair of hinges at the rear. Unsigned but of the highest quality and a form that I have never seen in 50 years.
