Description
A rare example of a French “Horomètre ou Cadran solaire de portefeuille” [Horometer or a sundial for wallet] by A. Thibault, based in Paris. The horomètre was invented around 1840. We have some traces in two newspapers in 1840 and 1841, then 1853.
This horizontal sundial is a capuchin type sundial used for only one latitude, here 49 degree, so the Paris, Nancy or Strasbourg latitude.
This card-dial or capuchin-type dial was invented by Regiomantanus and Apian.
A. Thibault was “licencié es sciences”, then teacher of physics and mathematiques in Paris, 14 rue Pierre-Sarrazin.
The present example is complete with its original slipcase with its explanation for using the dial.
The sundial measures 15×8,4cm and the slipcase : 14,7×9,3cm.
Very rare.
