Description
A fine (wear to stage and bronze legs) Edinburgh H model monocular microscope with unusual eyepiece and stage options.
Standing 13 inches tall (16 inches fully racked), this microscope has 5 objectives ranging from 2 inch to 1/12, 3 eyepieces (two standard-6 and 10X together with a variable telescoping one-marked 10, 20, 30 to INF), coarse and fine adjustment, fully racked mechanical stage with bright steel stage clips, substage iris and Abbe condenser on rack and pinion and a 2 inch double sided, swinging mirror.
Typical early 20th century (numbered 8836) construction with stable tripod configuration allowing for vertical and horizontal usage, this scope has a stage insert that I have never seen before. Constructed of two brass plates with 4 knurled screws (2 spring loaded and 2 with steel clips) and a rotating central glass plate. It would appear to be a rare variant compressor (compressorium), not a safety stage. It fits perfectly in the space between the stage clips and would account for the stage wear (see photo).
The microscope is mechanically nice and tight and cosmetically (except for the aforementioned areas of wear) with 99.9% bright golden lacquer intact. The dovetailed mahogany case has a robust mahogany handle and functional lock and key, It measures 13 x 10 x 8 inches. There is a space in the rear for a substage polariser? (easily obtained), otherwise complete.
