A 19th century Cranial trephine by Sabatneck of Vienna. Trephines are circular saws for removing a disk of bone from the cranium or skull. Down the central shaft is a pin for engaging the instrument in the skull. When engaged it is rotated by an ebony handle. Made of steel and ebony wood, signed ‘Sabatneck Wien’. The traverse board was used to make dead reckoning. The circular part has 32 compass points with eight holes on each point. In the middle are eight cords secured with little pins.
