Description

A three draw telescope with variable power pancaratic eye piece. It is heavily engraved  along the first and second draw tubes; ‘John Browning, London. Pancratic. This tube alone to be used for the purpose of adjusting the focus to suit the eye’.

The second tube engraved, ‘High power. To be drawn out to the double line and the focus re-adjusted by sliding in the other drawer, only to be used in the day time, when the weather is clear’.

Two John Brownings (father and son)worked from 1783 – 1815. The pancratic effect had only just been discovered and a few manufacturers around this time rushed it into production.

The telescope, fully drawn measures 38.25″ (97 cms) and 15″ (38 cms) closed. The main lens is a triple element of 46 mm diameter which gives a very fine, clear view with magnifications between 22 x and 38 x.

It has a ray shade and eye piece cover slider. In very good condtion.

It comes with a later wooden display stand.
