19th C. French Cauteries: One with Platinum Point

Two French cauteries with ebony handles, one by Collin, the other by Luer, both 3rd quarter of the 19th century in date. The spherical cautery by Collin has a platinum localizing point. A similar platinum-tipped cautery is shown in the 1867 Robert & Collin catalog and is described as M. Guersant’s cautery for “tumeurs érectile”. Vérick-Malassez stage hemocytometer, c. 1880

An early Malassez-type stage hemocytomer by Constantin Vérick signed both in the lid of the case and on the instrument. The instrument is called in French “Compte-globules à chambre humide graduée”. A C1887 mint and boxed example of Ferdinand De Boyeres “Carolus” electro-magnetic battery pendant with suspension cord. Diameter: 4 cm. Charriere’s Rowel Saw for Osteological Surgery

A fine signed example of Charriere’s rowel saw for osteological surgery. Steel and brass with checkered ebony handles. The earliest reference we can find for the saw is in Bernard and Huette’s Specimen Des Instruments De Chirurgie Modèles Charrière: Extrait Du Précis Iconographique De Médecine Opératoire… (Paris: 1854, plate V)*, but it was probably introduced some years before that date.  It is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition.    Read More...

A very rare Canivet graphometer with solid brass plate dated 1764

A brass graphometer with solid plate, not perforated, and with a beautiful thickness of 4mm, signed “Canivet à la sphere à Paris” and dated “1764”. We do not know any other graphometer from this period with a thick non-perforated brass plate. The instrument measures 15.5 cm in width.
