This is a so-called Gould-style compound microscope with a rectangular support pillar. The support is hinged at the bottom and mounted in the inner bottom of a rectangular wooden case. A good brass, octagonal compass/sundial in it’s original black card case c.1800 French with 50% silvering of the compass dial, needle points North (30 degree offset for deviation). Four hour scales in both Roman and Arabic styles. Folding bird gnomen is adjustable from 40-60 degrees North latitude. Ten cities and their latitudes on the reverse (including Quebec, Canada). A simple botanist’s hand microscope, France, circa 1850. The instrument is not signed. It is made of turned blackened wood and brass. It measures 4 inches in length and 1 inch in diameter. Despite a small accident on the handle, the microscope is in good original condition. Its optics has two biconvex lenses giving high magnification when the plant, or transparent object, is placed against the second, larger lens. It gives an excellent image. Read More...
